Reoccurring Complexity

As I am commonly inspired by textures found in nature, this collection was inspired by trees. After seeing “Anti-Mass” by Cornelia Parker at SFMOMA, I was intrigued with the textures of the wood that had been burned. Some of the textures that I used were formed when wood is burned with electricity, like lightning.

For this collection, just as it was inspired from burning, I used the burnout technique. After layering thinner 100% natural fiber fabrics on top of denim I silk screened the chemical on top to be burned away in the heat press. In some cases I did layers of pigment first to create more dimension. I also used fusing to create depth for the swatch that has the texture of burnt wood like seen in the exhibit I was initially inspired by.
